LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis which simply means, “to shape the cornea ‘within’ using a laser. LASEK is different from LASIK in that LASIK, involves making a corneal flap, while LASEK treats the surface of the cornea without the need for a corneal flap.
LASIK has some advantages and disadvantages over LASEK. LASIK’s primary advantage is a quicker return to functional vision with slightly less post-operative discomfort. LASEK’s advantage over LASIK is more patients qualify for LASEK (especially people with thin corneas or wide pupils) and LASEK has a wider margin of safety by avoiding the risks associated with creating a corneal flap. You and Dr. Vold will discuss which option he feels is best for your based on your age, ocular health, amount of correction necessary along with occupational and lifestyle needs.
