Dr. George Tanaka Ophthalmologist at Vold Vision

Meet Dr. Tanaka

H. George Tanaka, MD., certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, specializes in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and anterior segment surgery. Dr. Tanaka completed his fellowship training in glaucoma at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He also conducted two years of biomedical eye research at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary before completing his residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, California. His approach to glaucoma care combines a full spectrum of traditional glaucoma surgeries as well as cutting edge, minimally invasive procedures, laser treatments and diagnostic techniques, to make up a customized approach which is tailored to his patient's needs and disease state.

Education and Training

Dr. Tanaka is a graduate of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, and he did an internship at Harvard Medical School Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Prior to this, Dr. Tanaka graduated from Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He has been awarded multiple scholarships, academic awards and honors and has numerous presentations and publications in the field of glaucoma disease. He also received the distinguished Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Tanaka has lectured locally, nationally and internationally on glaucoma diagnosis, treatment and surgery.

Specialties and Skills

He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, and is an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Tanaka also serves as the co-director of the Glaucoma Service at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, California, where he has been awarded the Clinical Faculty Teaching Award five times. He also serves on the board of Hospital de la Familia Foundation, a charitable organization committed to developing a sustainable high-quality eye care program in rural Guatemala.
