What is the Best Age to Consider LASIK Vision Correction Surgery?

What do the majority of LASIK patients have in common? Other than drastically improved vision, one thing they regret is not having the procedure done sooner. If we’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it one thousand times at a post-op appointment when a happy patient can’t believe they didn’t have LASIK sooner.

The LASIK procedure

More than 19 million LASIK eye surgery procedures have been performed since the FDA approved the technique in 1999. And over the past two decades, it has become one of the most studied, most commonly sought elective procedures. It’s proven safe and effective, with a world-wide 99% of individuals achieving 20/40 vision and 90% enjoying 20/20 vision after their procedure. LASIK is well-lauded as well, with a 96% satisfaction rate among patients. Here at Vold Vision, our percentages are even higher with most patients achieving BETTER than 20/20 vision.

At Vold Vision, our nationally-recognized team utilizes the latest, most advanced laser correction technology. And we’re proud to offer treatments via the Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser, which offers top-of-the-line precision and speed with practically unmatched gentleness.

The Zeiss laser vision correction platform uses a femtosecond laser, which delivers a series of ultra-low-duration light pulses to create a flap in the corneal epithelium, the clear, protective covering on the surface of the eye. Then, pulses from an excimer laser (which uses low-temperature UV light) remove microscopic amounts of material from the eye, reshaping it to properly focus light and produce clear vision.

What’s the best age for LASIK?

There’s no official age limit or set-in-stone best age to undergo this life-changing procedure. If your vision and prescription have been stable for over one year, we encourage you to set up a free consultation and one of our highly trained doctors will evaluate your eyes to see if LASIK is a safe and effective way to correct your vision.

LASIK candidates must typically be over 18, as visual acuity continues to develop into early adulthood. Numerous experts agree that the ideal age range for pursuing LASIK surgery is between 25 and 40. At this age, vision changes have stabilized. And our expert ophthalmologists will have the clearest idea of your needs and how to best correct any visual issues. And while patients can’t technically be too old for LASIK, numerous structural problems may arise in the eye after the age of 40, some of which may preclude the traditional LASIK approach.

One such condition is called presbyopia, age-related farsightedness that gradually develops in the early-to-mid-40s, as the eye’s lens becomes more inelastic and loses its ability to properly focus light. Another age-related LASIK complication is the formation of cataracts, caused by the degradation and clumping of proteins within the eye’s lens. Like presbyopia, cataracts advance with age and become more likely to develop in one’s 40s and onward.

If one of our doctors determines that LASIK is not right for you because of one of these conditions, the good news is that we offer many excellent treatments and surgery options that can deliver the same LASIK-like results for patients with presbyopia or cataracts.

Amazing, friendly, knowledgeable staff! Dr. Senekal was very professional and had an amazing bedside manner. I would recommend him to anyone looking at getting cataract/laser surgery. I came from Grande Prairie just to see him and his staff!
