About Retinas

To keep your retinas healthy, Dr. Steven Vold, a nationally known authority in retinal health brings his award-winning experience to diagnose and treat conditions of the retina. Along with our team of board-certified ophthalmologists and eye surgeons, patients who travel to Vold Vision in Northwest Arkansas will receive an accurate diagnosis and a customized treatment plan. While there are over 30 types of retinal diseases - such as macular edema, retinal artery occlusion, and infectious retinitis - it is age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy that are the most widespread cause of blindness in America. AMD is a serious condition, but it has become more treatable as recently as ten years ago. As a result, our goal at Vold Vision is to put patients at ease, help them understand the most current treatment options, and work together to manage their condition.

Signs and Symptoms

AMD may not have any specific symptoms early in its cycle. However, as the disease progresses, you may experience warping of lines that are actually straight and the odd sensation that bright colors appear washed out and dull. Further untreated progression may also subject you to a gradual or sudden loss, darkening, or blurring of central vision. If you have diabetes, you may run the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Just as high blood sugar is unhealthy for the rest of your body, it can also cause damage to the blood vessels in your eyes, specifically the retina. This results in the swelling of the retina (macular edema) and the loss of sight. Another classic symptom is dark floaters as the retina tries compensating for the blocked blood vessels by growing new ones.

Treatment Options

At Vold Vision, we are proud to bring some of the most advanced retinal treatments to the state of Arkansas. Our advanced micro-pulse green diode laser gives us the ability to treat patients without having them suffer from blind spots. Other types of treatments, such as surgery, are also available to best address whatever specific situation with which you are dealing. In the interest of enriching your quality of life, we are holistic and hands-on when it comes to collaborating with your other physicians so that all your care-givers work from the same information. This helps ensure congruent treatments and reduces conflicting solutions or medications.
