Conditions
With over 7 million cones, up to 150 million rods, three layers of nerve cells, and two layers of synapses – all packed into a complex membrane a half-millimeter thick, the retina is unbelievably complex. As a result, many things can and do go wrong with it for many people. AMD, or age-related macular degeneration, is the most common cause of blindness for people over the age of 65. Diabetic retinopathy, on the other hand, causes more blindness in people under the age of 65 than any other retinal issue. Other common conditions include retinal vascular occlusions, flashes and floaters, retinal tears and detachments, macular pucker, macular holes, vitreomacular traction, and uveitis.
Treatment Options
The main benefit of treating eye disorders is that we can focus directly on the affected area. This reduces side-effects that could harm or affect another area of the eye. After a thorough eye exam and diagnosis, many patients are able to use medication to start their treatment if the disease has not advanced. AMD is commonly treated with an intravitreal injection which doesn’t hurt, thanks to the application of topical anesthesia. There are many types of medical injections that can be used and many provide effective results in keeping the condition at bay. Other forms of treatment, such as scleral buckle, is a silicone buckle used to directly treat retinal detachments. Other conditions are treatable with surgery or Vold Vision’s advanced micro-pulse green diode laser which eliminates the issue of blind spots. Laser photocoagulation like this is commonly used, with Vold’s pinpoint accuracy, to also treat retinal tears and detachments or diabetic retinopathy. Other types of retinal treatments include cryotherapy and ultrasonography.
