Are you looking for a way to reduce or eliminate your need for contacts or glasses? It seems like everyone has heard of LASIK, but SMILE is another form of laser vision correction that may work better for some people. SMILE has several advantages over LASIK, and the overall cost is similar. SMILE is an affordable alternative to a lifetime of paying for corrective lenses.
What is SMILE Laser Eye Surgery?
SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) is a type of laser eye surgery that uses a laser to reshape your cornea. The cornea, a clear structure at the front of the eye, helps light focus on the retina, creating a clear image. A refractive error such as nearsightedness occurs when light does not focus on the retina, resulting in blurred vision. SMILE corrects refractive errors by changing the shape of your cornea to focus light and improve your vision.
How Does SMILE Work?
Your SMILE procedure will be quick and comfortable, with numbing eye drops and IV medication to help you relax if needed. A laser passes through the outermost layer of the cornea (the epithelium) and focuses on the middle layers, where it creates a disc of corneal tissue called a lenticule. An incision only a few millimeters long allows your eye surgeon to remove the disc, giving your cornea the desired shape. This small incision causes minimal disruption to the cornea, making SMILE an excellent option for many people.
How Much is SMILE Laser Eye Surgery?
The cost of laser eye surgery like SMILE varies depending on several factors, including:
- Your location
- Your provider’s skill and experience
- Available financing plans
Being able to trust your provider should be the most important factor in where you choose to have SMILE. Your Vold Vision eye surgeons are experts in laser vision correction. All are fully qualified and highly trained, giving them the ability to achieve superior results.
The average cost of SMILE is on average $2,000 per eye, although it can be higher or lower. LASIK usually falls in the same price range, so price is not usually a major factor in choosing between the two.
Some providers offer low prices for SMILE but do not immediately disclose all the expenses involved, leading you to think you are receiving a better deal than you are. During your Vold Vision consultation, we will provide you with an accurate estimate that covers all your costs with no surprises.
What is Recovery Like After SMILE Laser Eye Surgery
Your vision will be blurry for about a day after SMILE, so you will need someone to drive you home afterward. You will receive lubricating and antibiotic eye drops to help with healing. Many people experience a few days of irritation, itchiness, or watery eyes. You can usually return to work and drive within a day or two. The tiny incision heals within days, making SMILE minimally disruptive to the corneal epithelium.

How is SMILE Different From LASIK?
SMILE and LASIK both use a laser to reshape the cornea, but they have several important differences. The SMILE incision is much smaller than the flap used to perform LASIK. As a result, LASIK may not be ideal for people with issues like dry eye or certain corneal conditions. It is also not recommended for those who play contact sports. Both procedures offer excellent vision correction with a high likelihood of 20/20 vision or better. Only a consultation can determine which will work best for your needs.
Am I a Good Candidate for SMILE?
Most adults with healthy eyes make good candidates for SMILE. Your eye surgeon will assess several criteria to determine if SMILE is right for you.
- 18 or older
- A stable vision prescription for a year or more
- Nearsightedness or astigmatism in the range that SMILE can treat
- Healthy eyes (SMILE is not recommended for people with conditions like glaucoma)
If you are not eligible for SMILE, your Vold Vision team will help you find a procedure that will work safely for you. We offer the widest range of options in the region to help more people see more clearly.
