What is an Eye Exam?

At Vold Vision, the 360-Eye Exam is a comprehensive eye exam to determine more than your visual acuity. The exam reviews your and your family’s health history, measures the curvature of your cornea, depth perception, and color vision, and assesses the eye’s focusing, teaming, movement, and overall health.

Dr. Vold uses the 360-Eye Exam to notice any problems with the eye, whether with vision, diseases, or other health concerns. If Dr. Vold or his team of experienced doctors notice an area of concern, more testing may be needed to determine the nature of the problem.

Your 360-Eye Exam will start with a visual acuity test to measure how sharp your vision is, followed by a cover test, which is a simple way to see how your eyes work together and rule out strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes. We will have you focus on an object and then observe the position of your eyes while covering and uncovering each eye.

Then, you will have an Ishihara color blind test that detects color vision deficiencies and helps to identify other eye health problems. To assess your eye movements, you may be asked to follow a small light with just your eyes while holding your head still.

You will then have an exam with a slit lamp to give Dr. Vold a magnified, 360-degree/3D view of the front of your eyes, including eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and lenses. In addition to the examinations above, Dr. Vold provides a variety of other methods of testing for glaucoma.

Finally, during the refraction portion of your eye exam, you will choose between a series of paired lenses to fine-tune your eyeglass prescription. Dr. Vold and his team may also perform additional tests to thoroughly evaluate your vision and eye health, such as pupil dilation, to ensure we have an accurate diagnosis of your vision.

Even if you have no current vision problems, it is best to schedule annual eye exams consistently. Beyond visual acuity and updating your prescription, Vold Vision’s 360-eye Exam can:

  • Check for dry eye
  • Catch cataracts from sun damage
  • Diagnose underlying eye conditions
  • Manage allergy symptoms

Those with children may think they don’t need a comprehensive eye exam since their pediatrician did a vision evaluation; however, there is no substitute for a Vold Vision 360-Eye Exam. Only specialized professionals like Dr. Vold and his team have the experience, qualifications, and leading technology to provide all-encompassing eye exams.

Eye exams typically require little to no recovery. There is no pain or discomfort with Vold Vision’s 360-Eye Exam. If your eyes are dilated during your examination, you may need a ride home as your vision may remain blurry for a few hours after.

Every person, regardless of age or physical health, should consider themselves excellent candidates for regular Vold Vision 360-Eye Exams. Adults should have an eye exam every 1-2 years, and seniors over 61 should have annual eye exams. Even children should consider having eye exams.

Statistically, up to 10% of preschoolers and 25% of school-aged children have vision problems. According to the American Optometric Association, every child needs an exam at six months old and before starting school. If your child has no vision issues, it is still recommended to have their eyes examined every couple of years and limit the use of digital devices.

Why Should I Go to Vold Vision for an Eye Exam?

The 360-Eye Exams at Vold Vision in Northwest Arkansas are one of the most advanced and comprehensive eye exams. Looking at the eyeball from all angles, Dr. Steven D. Vold and his board-certified team of ophthalmologists and optometrists can determine if you need glasses, are a candidate for laser surgery, or are at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, or strokes.

The goal of our 360-Eye Exams is not just to give you an exam but to establish a lifelong relationship where we periodically track your vision treatment so you can enjoy sharp and clear vision for your entire life.
