iStent
Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma is a disease that impairs vision in older adults. It is caused when damage occurs to the eye’s optic nerve. The symptoms can start subtle at first, with a slow loss of peripheral vision, but if left untreated, the vision loss worsens over time and leads to permanent blindness.

Early treatment is necessary to prevent and control future vision loss. In earlier years, glaucoma treatments were not successful for many patients. Patients diagnosed with glaucoma can now feel hope as newer forms of treatment, such as micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), can have help with their glaucoma symptoms.

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries lower eye pressure, thus reducing the damage that can affect the optic nerve. Ophthalmologists offer various forms of MIGS, and Vold Vision is proud to provide iStent to patients who qualify for treatment.

Many individuals spend a great deal of time managing their glaucoma before considering a surgical procedure. iStent is a tiny implant placed within the eye to help reduce or restore normal eye pressure. iStent is a procedure that has helped thousands of patients manage an eye pressure condition, reduce vision loss, and assist in seeing more clearly.

The iStent implant is the world’s smallest implant (only 1mm in length) and is safe to use for glaucoma treatment. The device increases the eye’s ability to drain the fluid by creating a permanent opening through the blockage, reducing your need for medication and other treatment methods.

On an outpatient basis, our surgical team preloads the surgical titanium micro-bypass stent into a one-time, single-use sterile inserter. The inserter is meticulously designed for precision and accuracy, allowing the surgeon to maneuver the implant into position in the most micro-targeted manner.

Dr. Vold and his team of seasoned iStent surgeons have changed the lives of so many patients with this innovative, state-of-the-art glaucoma treatment, allowing them to save their vision and live a life free of worry and fear of additional vision loss.

Used on patients that travel throughout the U.S. to have this surgery under the hands of Dr. Vold, iStent:

  • Restores the eye’s natural ability to reduce the fluid inside the eye. If this fluid remains unchecked, the pressure increases, thus increasing the risk for severe vision loss.
  • Allows eye pressure to stay at a healthy, normal level
  • Eliminates or reduces the need for medication
  • Protects eye tissue often damaged by traditional surgeries
  • Can be implanted during cataract surgery
  • Has rapid recovery time
  • Allows future vision treatment options

Recovery from iStent tends only to take a few days, but Vold Vision recommends taking at least a week off from work and avoiding any activities that add pressure to your eyes, like exercise. You may experience blurry vision for a couple of days and be given eye drops to aid your recovery.

iStent is an FDA-approved, safe, and effective for most glaucoma patients depending on the stage, progression, and symptoms of the condition. The best candidates for iStent glaucoma treatment are adult patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma. Patients often combine iStent surgery with cataract removal, but it may be done independently.
